Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition characterized by inflammation and narrowing of the airways, leading to breathing difficulties. Common symptoms include wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness. It affects millions of people worldwide, both children and adults.

What is Flovent?

Flovent is a corticosteroid medication that is inhaled and prescribed for individuals aged 4 years and older who have asthma. Its primary function is to maintain low levels of lung inflammation and keep the airways open. The recommended dosage for this inhaler is twice daily. A consistent daily dosage of Flovent can effectively reduce the frequency and intensity of asthma attacks. However, it should be noted that Flovent is not intended as a rescue inhaler and therefore cannot provide immediate relief during an ongoing asthma attack.

How Flovent Inhaler Works?

Flovent functions as a corticosteroid and mimics the actions of cortisol, a hormone naturally produced by the body. When Flovent is inhaled, it directly targets the lungs, reducing inflammation and expanding the airways. This mechanism assists in managing asthma symptoms and serves as a preventive measure against asthma attacks.

Before Using Flovent Inhaler

Do not use Flovent if you are allergic to fluticasone. Similarly, avoid using Flovent Diskus if you are allergic to milk proteins.

This medicine should not be used to treat an ongoing asthma attack.

To ensure the safety of this medicine for you, inform your doctor if you have ever had any of the following:

  • Any type of infection (bacterial, viral, or fungal).
  • Glaucoma or cataracts.
  • An infection is caused by parasites (such as giardia, malaria, leishmaniasis, hookworm, pinworm, toxoplasmosis, and others).
  • Tuberculosis.
  • Herpes infection of the eyes.
  • Liver disease.
  • Low bone mineral density.
  • A weak immune system.

Prolonged use of steroids can lead to bone loss (osteoporosis), especially if you smoke, do not exercise, lack sufficient vitamin D or calcium in your diet, or have a family history of osteoporosis. Discuss your risk with your doctor.

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant. The potential harm of fluticasone to an unborn baby is not fully known. However, uncontrolled or untreated asthma during pregnancy can lead to complications such as low birth weight, premature birth, or eclampsia (dangerously high blood pressure that can pose risks to both mother and baby). The benefits of treating asthma may outweigh the potential risks to the baby.

It may not be safe to breastfeed while using fluticasone inhalation. Consult your doctor regarding any potential risks.

Flovent is not approved for use in children younger than 4 years old.
